History
Utsunomiya University was founded in 1949, and initially housed the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Liberal Arts (now the Faculty of Education). The Faculty of Engineering was added in 1964, and the Faculty of International Studies followed in 1994, making Utsunomiya University the university it is today.
May 1949 Through the amalgamation of the Tochigi Normal School, the Tochigi Normal School for Youth, and the Utsunomiya Agricultural and Forestry College (which formally closed on March 31, 1951), Utsunomiya University is established in accordance with the National School Law. Utsunomiya University initially consists of:
-The Faculty of Liberal Arts (comprising an Elementary School Teacher Course and a Junior High School Teacher Course)
-The Faculty of Agriculture (comprising of the Departments of Agriculture, Forestry, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Agricultural Engineering, and Agricultural Chemistry)
-An elementary school attached to the Faculty of Liberal Arts
April 1951 An attached junior high school and preschool are established
April 1953 The Department of General Agriculture is established within the Faculty of Agriculture

The Accounting Section is established within the Administration Bureau
May 1958 The Facilities Division is established
April 1964 Incorporating the Utsunomiya Technical Junior College, the Faculty of Engineering is established. It is comprised of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Chemistry.
April 1966 The Faculty of Liberal Arts is renamed the Faculty of Education.The Faculty of Agriculture is reorganized as follows:
-The Department of Agricultural Engineering is renamed the Department of Agricultural Development and Engineering and the University stops accepting applications for admission to the Department of General Agriculture.
-The Graduate School of Agriculture is established. It offers programs in the fields of Agriculture, Forestry, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Agricultural Development Engineering, and Agricultural Chemistry.

1967
The Weed Control Center is established within the Faculty of Agriculture.
April 1968 The Faculty of General Education is established.
The School Teachers' Training Course, Special Needs specialization is established within the Faculty of Education.
The Department of Precision Engineering is added to the Faculty of Engineering.
April 1970 The Accounting Department is reorganized within the General Affairs Department
April 1971 The Department of Electronic Engineering is added to the Faculty of Engineering
April 1973 The Graduate School of Engineering is established. It initially offers Master's programs in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Chemistry.
April 1974 The Department of Environmental Chemistry is added to the Faculty of Engineering
The position of vice-dean of student affairs is created.
April 1975 The Attached School for Special Needs Children is established.
The Electronic Engineering program is added to the Graduate School of Engineering.
April 1976 The Department of Information Science is added to the Faculty of Engineering.
May 1976 The Educational Technology Center is established within the Faculty of Education.
The Health Service Center is established.
April 1978 The Department of Civil Engineering is added to the Faculty of Engineering
The Environmental Chemistry program is added to the Graduate School of Engineering
April 1980 The Information Science program is added to the Graduate School of Engineering
April 1982 The Department of Civil Engineering is added to the Faculty of Engineering.
The Architectural Engineering program is added to the Graduate School of Engineering
April 1984 The Graduate School of Education is established, offering programs in School Educational Science and School Subject
April 1985 The Research and Instruction Center for Educational Practice is established within the Faculty of Education. The Educational Technology Centre is folded into the Centre for Educational Practice
Utsunomiya University joins in the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science (offering a doctoral course)
April 1986 The Civil Engineering program is added to the Graduate School of Engineering

The Information Processing Center is established
April 1988 The Faculty of Engineering is reorganized to consist of the Departments of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Information Science
May 1989 The Regional Cooperative Research Center is established.
April 1990 The General Education Course is added to the Faculty of Education
April 1991 The Faculty of Agriculture is reorganized to consist of the Departments of Bioproductive Science, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Economics, and Forest Science
The Center for Lifelong Learning Education and Research is established.
The Center for Weed Science Research is established, and incorporates the existing Weed Control Centre.
April 1992 The Master's Program of the Graduate School of Engineering is reorganized to consist of the programs of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Information Science
The Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Engineering is reorganized to consist of the specializations of Production and Information Science, and Material Science and Engineering

The University Hall opens.

The Faculty of International Studies is established, consisting of the Departments of International Social Studies and International Cultural Studies.
The Faculty of General Education is abolished
The Comprehensive Education Course is abolished
April 1995 The Graduate School of Agriculture is reorganized to consist of the programs of Bioproductive Science, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Economics, and Forest Science
The Research Cooperation Section is established
April 1996 The Admission Section is established
April 1997 The Energy and Environmental Science program is established as an independent department within the Graduate School of Engineering
April 1998 The Centre for Instrumental Analysis is established

The Satellite Venture Business Laboratory is established
April 1999 The Faculty of Education is reorganized to consist of the School Teacher Training Course, the Lifelong Education Course, and the Environment Education Course
The Research and Instruction Center for Educational Practice becomes The Integrated Research Center for Educational Practice
The Graduate School of International Studies is established, with programs in International Social Studies, and International Cultural Studies
The Center for Research of Weed Science becomes the Center for Research on Wild Plants
The Contract Office and International Student Service Office is established
April 2000 The Administration Bureau is reorganized to consist of the General Affairs Division, the Finance Division, and the Student Affairs Office
April 2001 The Genomics Research Institute is established
The Advanced Media Network Center replaces the Information Processing Center
The Curriculum Development Course is added to the Graduate School of Education
April 2002 The International Student Center is established
The Innovation Center for Research and Engineering Education is established
The International Student Affairs Section is established within the Student Affairs Division.
April 2003 The Special Support Education program is added to the Graduate School of Education
The Information and Control Systems Science specialization is established as an independent department within the Graduate School of Engineering
April 2004 Utsunomiya University legally becomes the National University Corporation Utsunomiya University
The International Exchange Studies program is added to the Graduate School of International Studies
April 2005 The Administration Bureau is reorganized to consist of the General Affairs Division, the Financial Affairs Division, and the Academic Research Department
The Cooperative Research Center, the Center for Instrumental Analysis, and the Satellite Venture Business Laboratory are combined to form the Collaboration Center for Research & Development
April 2006 The Intellectual Property Center is established
